Description
James A. Garfield acquired this home in 1876 to accommodate his large family. Named Lawnfield by reporters it was the site of the first successful front porch campaign which saw Garfield elected as 20th President of the United States in 1880. Following Garfield's assassination, the Memorial Library wing was added by Mrs. Garfield and her family - setting the precedent for presidential libraries.

James A. Garfield National Historic Site is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
November 1 to April 30
James A. Garfield National Historic Site is open Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. (closed Monday through Friday). School goups and adult groups are welcome by appointment. During winter school break, the site is open during the week as well.
The site is closed New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter Sunday, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
The last house tour leaves at 4:15 p.m. daily. Tours may be limited.

Basic Directions
James A. Garfield National Historic site is most easily accessed from Interstate 90. From I-90, exit at Route 306. Follow Route 306 north for two miles until you reach Route 20 (Mentor Avenue). Turn right (east) onto Route 20. James A. Garfield National Historic Site is two miles up on the left.
