Oklahoma’s official state meal, as legalized in 1988, reads more like a week’s menu rather than a single meal from fried okra, squash, black-eyed peas and corn to chicken fried steak, barbecue pork, gravy, grits, cornbread, biscuits, sausage, strawberries, and pecans. Whether or not you have the appetite to taste it all in a single sitting the important fact is that every item in the list is grown or made somewhere in this Southern state.

And since Oklahoma ranks in the top ten nation-wide in terms of cattle production, the abundance of succulent steak on offer in Oklahoma City restaurants should come as no surprise. It’s surprisingly tricky to track down a buffalo burger, however, despite the fact that these too are raised for meat here. If you have a hankering for bison jerky or juicy steaks, steer for Hinton and the Witchita Buffalo Company LLC or pay a weekend visit to the OSU-OKC Farmers Market (that’s Oklahoma State University - Oklahoma City for those unfamiliar with the jargon).
