Nestled along the banks of the Ohio River in West Virginia's northern panhandle, Wheeling is built on the site of Fort Henry, site of the last battle of the Revolutionary War. This industrial city is designated a National Heritage Area and has many historic sites of interest plus plenty of outdoor recreation and entertainment.

Tour Wheeling's history on the Eckhart Victorian home tour and stop by the plaque marking the site of Fort Henry. West Virginia Independence Hall Civil War Historic Site and Museum details area history when Wheeling was part of Virginia. Centre Market features antiques, shops and eateries in two historic market houses. Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum displays thousands of historic toys and trains.

Oglebay Resort Park includes a municipal park with swimming, fishing, paddle boating, three golf courses, tennis, picnicking, train ride, cabins and a lodge. The resort also features a zoo, planetarium, garden center and arboretum. Also on site is the mansion of Earl Oglebay, open for touring. Wheeling Park offers swimming, a water slide and boating on Good Lake plus golf, tennis and an aviary. Nearby Tomlinson Run State Park offers camping.

Wheeling offers many entertainment options, from Wheeling Island Racetrack & Gaming Center to live entertainment at the Capitol Music Hall. Oglebay Institute's Towngate Theatre & Cinema presents community theater and films while Victoria Vaudeville Theatre offers 50s and 60s live music shows. Artworks around Town is a gallery in the Centre Market downtown.

In addition to over 175,000 square feet of camping, hunting and fishing apparel and gear for sale, Cabela's is home to the Powderhorn Grill Restaurant, offering both wild game and traditional fare. Other dining options in Wheeling include Bella Via Restaurant for homemade Italian and American dishes and Generations, a family-owned restaurant with a vast menu and the area's largest outdoor deck seating.

Wheeling is located about 180 miles north of Charleston, WV and about 60 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, PA. From Charleston, take I-77 north to I-70 east.
